scrapbook catch up

One of my absolute favourite hobbies is scrapbooking.  I’ve been doing it for years.  However, it’s been almost a year since I’ve done any scrapbooking at all.  I’ve just not felt motivated.  Perhaps I’ve been in a rut, or uninspired or some such thing.

However, the other day I just felt like scrapbooking.  Maybe it’s my new scrapbook room that makes working so lovely.  But, I finished my pages for January 2009.  I didn’t have many, so it was a quick project, but it seems to have started the scrapbooking bug up again and I hope to finish all of ‘09 by the end of spring!

Here are the pages I did for the few photos I had for January:

not letting go of winter

dsc_0016

This was Bug’s first year skiing.  I don’t think she wants the season to end.  She really took to the sport and was amazingly proficient at it.  She’s also amazingly proficient at maintaining the look.  She got these all by herself out of the garage and mostly had herself outfitted.  Colin caught her at the last minute and she was so proud of herself that he couldn’t bear not to help her finish getting outfitted.  She spent some time struggling through the backyard terrain until she decided it just wasn’t the same and let Daddy put it all away until next year.

knitting circle

I re-joined a knitting circle I belonged to years ago.  Actually, it was when I was pregnant with Bug. that I left the group.  I wasn’t knitting as much as the birth came closer as I wanted to spend every possible minute with Fuss.  However, I’ve been really wanting to knit more complicated projects than blankets so I thought the encouragement and tutoring would be a good idea.  The woman who runs it is a fabulous, master knitter.  She goes around the table helping those who have questions.  It’s also a wonderful social time as it’s quite a large group.  Amazingly enough, when I walked in a few weeks ago, most of them remembered me.  Wow.  I thought there would be no way after over four years, but that’s knitters for you!

So, what am I working on????  Well…….

That’s just a fraction and they are projects I’ve had sitting around for some time now!  This display consists of 4 pairs of thrum mittens, one pair of cuddly mittens, two wee sweaters and a knitted play farm .  All in various stages of completion, or needing to be put on needles.  I promise to post as I complete them with the help of master knitter Gloria.  Who did crocheted button holes the other day for me.  That’s right - I’ve been knitting all these years and I’ve no clue how to crochet.

Alice in Wonderland

alice

Colin and I went on a double date with my cousin and her husband to see this movie.  We bought our tickets first and then ran to grab a bite to eat.  Our sitter was a running behind so we didn’t have much time.  The tickets for the movie are incredibly expensive up here.  I think they were 15.50 each.  We got to the restaurant and found out we could have bought them with our meal for $7.  Too bad.  Well, we know for next time!  We had such a great time and I loved the movie.  I loved the self-absorbed personality of the red queen!  I do think she may have been my favourite character, although the Cheshire cat was quite quaint.

I think Depp’s role wasn’t big enough for him although he played it well.  I like him, so it doesn’t really matter what he does, I’ll tell you I liked it.

I found the 3D effects amazing - far superior to Avatar’s.  It had way more depth.  I was unable to grasp on my own that it was kind of Alice in Wonderland 2.  I hope it’s because I was tired, or I had just read the book and my expectations were high, and not that I’m plain stupid.  That would be unfortunate.

I would not take my children to see this, although there were children of a similar age there (at a 9:15 movie!).  Fuss is really bugging to see a 3D movie since he’s never known us to go to a movie and now we’ve been to two in a matter of weeks and both were 3D.  I may take him this week or next to see the Dragon one that’s just come out today.  If you know of any reason I shouldn’t, please share!  I’d hate to make a mistake at these prices!  (Meaning for therapy for Fuss.)

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

st-pat-001

Fuss made this festive arrangement at his Little Diggers Club.  There’s a pot of clover with gold pieces hidden in it all under a rainbow.

Interesting thing here is that Fuss got totally stressed out when he was making the rainbow.  He couldn’t remember the order of the colours.  He asked everyone and they didn’t know either.  (I asked Colin why he didn’t phone me, but that seemed to have failed to cross his mind.)  Someone finally looked it up for him since Fuss wasn’t going to do it unless it was done properly.

I’m off to fix dinner.  Sausages and mashed potatoes.  I know that I should add some cabbage in there somewhere, but since none of us eats cabbage, I’ll give it a miss.

Slainte!

Ghostwalk - Stott

ghostwalk

This book was amazing!  I loved every word.  I found it to be the perfect mix of historical fiction (but very well-researched so there was very little fiction), mystery and romance.  But a non-traditional romance, not a yucky romance.

I have no idea where I came across this book, but it was on my library list and I noticed it was on the shelves of our new library so I picked it up.   (Our regular library which is walking distance has closed for renovations for the next year.  Our next closest is about a 10 minute drive away.  It’s funny because not only did the city close our neighbourhood library down, but they closed the four surrounding libraries as well.  There’s an entire quadrant of our city without library service.  Seems like poor planning to me.)

Ghostwalk was so good that I felt that I could read it again immediately.  I’m sure I would get so much more out of it the second reading.  However, I’ve never read a book twice, and I’m not sure I’ll spend the time, but I’m tempted.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves history and suspense.  I really was guessing up until the end.

Enjoying the journey,  Amanda

passed time

Here I am!

We had work done on the house, which I’ve blogged about earlier and which I’ll post about in a bit.  Something happened and my internet was down for a couple of weeks.  It was frustrating and I was none too pleased with the contractor who caused the problem.  However, we had someone in to fix it and make it wireless to boot, so it all worked out and it’s back up and running.

I had a running list of posts I wanted to write once it was back up.  It got very, very long.  Dauntingly long.  And, I’m a “start where you are” sort of person.  So, I think I’ll adapt that and say that I’m going to “continue where I am”.

I’m giving myself permission not to do the back-posts and start from here.  Rather liberating, particularly since looking at the list was beginning to stress me out.

However, there were a few things that happened that I’ll chat a bit about!

Fuss had another Little Diggers class.  One of the plants was an umbrella plant.  Cool.  The nursery had them make a beach scene and provided little animals for the students to choose from.  Fuss chose two alligators and a moose.  Not sure how the moose fits in.  The funniest thing about the scene?  Bug will come along when Fuss isn’t in the room and hide the animals in amongst the plants and stones.  Fuss gets all bent out of shape looking for them.

Fuss was so pleased he asked if he could be in the picture.

Also while my Internet was down the kids graduated from ski school for the year.  Fuss’ ceremony was in a dark room in the lodge and was crowded and totally disappointing.  Bug’s was on the slopes which was wonderful, as it was her first year so it deserves a special spot.

On the food front, this was the most stellar thing I made over the last few weeks.

I know!  It doesn’t look like much, but it was so divine I almost couldn’t save it to share at dessert time.  It was one of Martha Stewart’s Dinners at Home desserts.  All you do is toast some hazelnuts (I was supposed to blanch them first but didn’t have the patience and I think the skins actually added a rich flavour), stir them into a sugar/water cooked concoction and bob’s your uncle.  I couldn’t keep from picking at it whilst I cooked the rest of the meal.  (The final dessert had this over vanilla ice cream with chunks of dark chocolate as well.)

I also finished a few books.  Amazing how much time I had when I didn’t have the internet.

The Pat Barker trilogy was phenomenal and all three books continue to live with me.  I love it when that happens at the close of a book.  The characters are so rich that they just stay at the forefront.

I also read John the Revelator by Peter Murphy.  Unless you are a huge fan of modern Irish Literature, I don’t recommend this.  There was nothing special about it and, honestly, it bordered on trite.

That’s it for now!  We are all caught up.  Onward…..

Enjoying the journey,  Amanda
